How do I list senior year courses when applying in the fall?
Updated October 4, 2026
Most students apply to college in the fall of senior year, before senior courses are finished. Colleges know this. They want to see what your student is taking, not guesses at grades.
What the fall transcript looks like
Show 9th through 11th grade with final grades, then add a 12th grade block listing each course your student is taking or plans to take. Put IP in the grade column. Give each course the credit it will earn. Colleges use the senior course list to judge rigor: did the student keep doing math and science, or coast?
| 12th grade (in progress) | Credit | Grade |
|---|---|---|
| English 12: Composition and Literature | 1.0 | IP |
| Pre-Calculus | 1.0 | IP |
| Physics with Lab | 1.0 | IP |
| Government (fall) and Economics (spring) | 1.0 | IP |
| Spanish III | 1.0 | IP |
| Studio Art | 0.5 | IP |
The credits-in-progress line
Under the totals, show three lines so the numbers are never confusing:
Credits in progress (grade 12): 5.5, shown separately
Projected total at graduation: 23.5
Cumulative GPA (grades 9 to 11 only): 3.52
IP courses are left out of the GPA until a real grade exists. If you include a guess, the GPA is no longer a fact.
The update schedule
- Fall application: send the transcript with senior courses listed as IP.
- After first semester: many colleges ask for a mid-year report. On the Common App, the counselor (for homeschoolers, usually the parent) submits it once first-semester grades are available, with an updated transcript. Some colleges require it, some treat it as optional, so check each college.
- End of senior year: send a final transcript with every grade filled in and the final GPA. On the Common App, the Final Report generally goes after the student has accepted admission to a school.
Update the same transcript each time, changing IP to the real grade, and put a new date next to your signature. Do not change any 9th through 11th grade entries between versions unless you are fixing a mistake.
Common mistakes
- Leaving senior courses off entirely. The reader cannot judge rigor from three years.
- Listing projected grades. Use IP.
- Forgetting the second half of a year-long course. A year-long course in progress is still IP in the fall.
- Skipping the final transcript. Admission offers are often conditional on final grades.
Quick questions
How do I show senior year courses on a transcript when applying in the fall?
List each 12th grade course with its credit and mark the grade IP for in progress. Add a credits-in-progress line and leave those courses out of the GPA until grades exist.
When do I send an updated homeschool transcript to colleges?
Send an updated transcript with first-semester grades if a college asks for a mid-year report, and send a final transcript when senior year ends.
Transcript Builder is our tool. Mark any course IP and it shows credits in progress and stays out of the GPA. Change IP to a real grade later, and the totals update. Your information stays on your own computer; nothing is uploaded.
